The Rise of Donald Glover
Movies, music, and television are a big three in American pop culture and if you can succeed in one, you can be a superstar. Very few have been stars in two of those categories let alone all three. Over the past few years, whether by design or happenstance, we are seeing someone making a run at all three and producing great work while doing so. This person is none other than Donald Glover and it shocks me that not enough people are noticing the moves he's making. Glover is positioning himself to become one of the most influential people in American pop culture.
At just 33 years old, Glover already has an impressive resume. He was a writer for the Emmy-winning, critically acclaimed sitcom 30 Rock, appeared in multiple movies e.g. The Lazarus Effect and The Martian as well as releasing two music albums (2011's Camp and 2013's Grammy nominated Because the Internet) under his rap name Childish Gambino.
These accomplishments alone would have certain people content, but not Donald Glover. When we look back at the trajectory of Glover’s career, it will be the year 2016 that will be remembered as the year that pole-vaulted Glover into superstardom. Glover finished filming Spiderman: Homecoming which will be released in 2017. His role in the movie is still not known but the fact that he is a part of the massive media machine that is Marvel/Disney is a huge deal. This new Spiderman movie is the third relaunch of Spiderman and the first without Sony. With Disney extremely invested in their plans for the next decade for the Marvel Comic Universe, they will make sure Spiderman succeeds.
Not only was Glover busy taking part of the MCU, but he also debuted his new television series on FX named, Atlanta. Glover is the showrunner and star of the acclaimed series. Atlanta is a breath of fresh air; it is extremely well written and it whimsically, as well as acutely, explores the inner workings of the urban community. The show sheds light on racism, gun violence, relationship issues and everything in between. Atlanta has already been picked up for a second season and I for one can’t wait.
So far this year, Glover is linked to a huge movie and a is a creator of a critically acclaimed television show, but probably the biggest news for Glover came this past weekend when it was announced he will be playing Lando Calrissian in the upcoming and untitled Star Wars spin-off movie following a young Han Solo. Lando was previously played by the cool Billy Dee Williams and is an iconic character of the Star Wars universe. This is huge for Glover: these upcoming Star Wars films are set to release in the next few years will no doubt have record breaking numbers at the box office. This will allow Glover’s celebrity to grow as well as show his talent to people he may not have been able to previously.
Glover is on the path to super stardom, he has set himself up nicely with the right projects. At this point it is all on his execution which with talent is all but a given. We look forward to these projects as well what lies next for Donald Glover.
