Stranger Things Theory (Spoiler Alert)
Netflix’s new show 'Stranger Things' created by the Duffer brothers is killing it as the 80's mystery/drama we didn't even know we wanted. It's like a Steven Spielberg movie as a TV show. In my first watch through I was loving every second of it from the characters to the soundtrack. Now after watching it a second time I'm ready to start theorizing:
Who is Eleven?
When we meet Eleven she is a young girl who escapes from Hawkins Department of Energy; a government facility in a small town in Indiana. The most obvious conclusion is that Eleven is actually Jane Ives the daughter of Terry Ives, the woman that Joyce and Hopper questioned about Dr. Brenner, and also the same one who was part of Dr. Brenner’s research 12 years prior. However, her sister who is skeptical about Terry’s trauma mentions that she miscarried in the third trimester. Then How could Jane and Eleven be the same person?
Okay, here's where it gets weird. Let's analyze our friend Eleven real quick. She's about 12 years old, she has a tattoo that says 11, she doesn't speak much, she didn't have a childhood, she has telekinetic powers, when she uses them too much she can cause damage to herself. I think Eleven might be a clone, the Eleventh clone of Jane Ives. Some people think that she can just be the Eleventh test subject but we did not see a similar tattoo on Terry Ives. Dr. Brenner could have failed to control her in the past which lead him to take on a fatherly role in hopes to gain her trust. Alternatively he could have pushed her too far and caused permanent damage that ultimately lead to death. I mean they traveled into another dimension, how much of a reach is cloning?
What was Dr. Brenner trying to do?
Dr. Brenner had been running that program for years, and the program got shut down and then secretly started up again. The government is working very closely with him to keep it secret, exhibit A a replica of a little boy's body filled with stuffing. This show takes place during the Cold War when the United States and Russia were competing with each other for information and power. In the past he had subjects take LSD to “expand their minds” and it looks like the goal of that is what Eleven is now. At first it looked like he was trying to decipher audio that couldn't normally be heard, when eleven was standing listening to that Russian spy, but then the monster appeared and he seemed to be much more interested in that. He also had that weird experiment where he had eleven stare at that cat even though she's afraid of cats.
What it looks like to me is that Brenner was aware of this other world the whole time. I forget who but someone mentioned that you need an immense amount of energy to rip a hole into the other side. I think with that cat experiment that's exactly what was going on. For some reason when Eleven is in fear or distress her powers heighten immensely, I mean she flipped a Van! This means that Eleven does have the potential to open portals on her own, but Dr. Brenner took an interest in the monster because he doesn't need to look at cats to open portals. At least not after it is touched by Eleven.
Let's talk about the monster that the Internet is calling Tulip head. Where the hell did this thing come from? From what we can tell the threat of the monster is a relatively new thing assuming that the gate at Hawkins was the first one ever. The existence of the monster however is harder to tell. Chronologically we first see the monster during an experiment where Eleven had to go in “the bath” where she can focus her powers more. She sees the monster eating something, so we know that it had food before it could crossover. What it's eating i don't know but it looks like an egg shaped pile of meat. When Eleven touched Tulip Head it became aware of her and all the people on other side watching it.
We should note that the world it escapes from looks very different than the upside down that we've seen Joyce, Hopper, and Nancy explore. I'm assuming this means that this was just a psychic connection but then why would it be eating? In whatever case that moment causes it to go into the other side and eat some humans. I have no idea how this monster could have come about or why. But it's interesting to consider whether ,or, not it's connected to Terry Ives coma like state.
Even if I'm way off on all of these I'm still already excited for season 2. Now hurry up and confirm it Netflix!
