Mayor of NYC Vows to Close Jail on Rikers Island
This past Friday Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed to close the jail on Rikers Island. The mayor is backing a plan to close the major Jail complex that has been plagued with scandal for years from mistreatment of inmates to corruption within the corrections division. With Rikers Island getting the worse press it is no surprise that politicians are walking back that original notion that it would be impossible and improbable that Rikers Island could be shut down.
The mayor is following the 97-page plan proposed by an Independent Commission. The report lays out a plan that would allow the jail complex to be shut down, and in place, the city would build smaller jails in the 5 boroughs. The proposed plan would cost about 10 billion dollars, and span the next 10 years. The mayor who is also seeking re-election seems to be very passionate about seeing this through, and knows this will be a big change to our justice system; a step in the right direction.
Jay Z's miniseries of the unfortunate events that befell Khalief Browder helped to put the issues of Rikers Island back into the spotlight, and no doubt played a role in pushing the politicians to take another look at the situation. The jail system in America is broken, and I have hope that what is now happening here in New York will have a major ripple effect across the entire country.
