It’s crunch time! Here’s my picks for your last-minute Christmas gifts for the wine lovers in your life.
Let’s start with reds.
Signorello Estate Cabernet 2014 Napa Valley. OMG. This was just an amazing Cabernet. Really. Ironically, it came at a time when my palate was saying no to cabs, but there was no saying no to this wine. Notes of fruit, smoke, licorice, blend seamlessly in this lovely, smooth, rich, wine. It has beautiful silky tannins and a long, dry, satisfying finish. Retails for $100.
Clos du Val Estate Cabernet 2015. Another rich and bold wine from California this one has delicious notes of dark bitter sweet chocolate, mocha, earth, and cherry. It has a rustic edge. Fantastic and full bodied, structured, and balanced. Not a simple wine, but simply wonderful. Retails for $52.
Stags Leap The Investor 2015. This rich, bold California blend is full of juicy red and black fruit, chewy licorice notes, earth, and leather. Very well balanced. The 2014 retails at $60 on their site but can be found for between $40 and $50 depending on where you shop.
King Estate Pinot Noir 2016. Nice body, ripe red fruit, earth notes, long dry satisfying finish. This wine from Oregon is a steal at $28.
La Fiera Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2016. This interesting Italian wine is smoky, with solid notes of red and black fruit. It’s light bodied, food friendly and has a nice dry finish. At under $10, this a great wine to have on hand for when you weren’t sure you were exchanging gifts.
Robert Mondavi Oakville Fume Blanc 2015. This is such a surprising wine. It’s an herbaceous explosion of flavor. A little grass as well, but the herbs here are really what steals the show. If you’re a Sauvignon blanc fan, but want to switch up to something a little different for the cooler weather, Fume Blanc actually is Sauvignon blanc fermented in oak. Sells for $40.
Quinta da Rede Duoro Reserva 2015. This white wine, while fresh and crisp, also has a lovely, substantial mouth feel. Full of scrumptious fruit. Pair with fish or Asian dishes. At just about $12, this is another awesome wine to have on hand for when you need a quick gift for a white wine fan.
A cool weather rose
Mulderbosch 2017 Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a lush, semi-dry, fruit forward rose of Cabernet Sauvignon. When I sampled this rose the weather was changing and I thought it was going to be so sad drinking the last bit of summer. But I was pleasantly surprised to find this wine can easily stand up to the current cooler temperatures. It’s delicious, and unlike the summer, which must end, this South African wine can be drunk year-round. At just around $10 a bottle, this a great rose for friends that love to drink pink.
