An Open Letter to The Bronx

An Open Letter to The Bronx

To the Borough of The Bronx,

The life of a promising young man was taken right from his hands. To say it wasn't fair is an understatement. That young boy was innocent and didn't deserve what was given to him. Our hearts break for his family, the community, and for the generation we live in. We go through many tragedies growing up in The Bronx, more often than we should. Each time our hearts break more than before. They all hit home just as hard, and all I can ask is when will enough be enough?

The Bronx has always had a reputation for negative stories, negative compounded with all the negative situations that occur. But there's more to us. With all of it against us, I'll never lose hope in The Bronx. There's more to our borough, and it's up to us to showcase it. We are a borough who stands strong and united throughout the toughest time. We are built tough but have hearts full of love. We can fix this heartbreaking issue that's occurring in our streets by showing that love to one another.

For that one innocent young man, in light of his soul, thousands around the borough gathered to create a heartwarming vigil for him. The idea of knowing the person standing right beside you didn't come to mind as we stood in his honor. What mattered was that everyone was there to fight for one cause and that cause is to seek justice for what is wrong. We stood with pride because that's what our hearts told us to do. That's what truly makes up The Bronx.

With that being said, together we MUST be the change we want to see. We must share and encourage that love throughout our communities. We must inspire our youth because hurting each other is just a loss in itself. There should never be a war like this! A platform must be built where our youth can come as one and relate, a space where we will feel safe, as we are all going through similar struggles throughout our lives. We must bring light to our achievements within the community no matter how big or small. Most importantly, we must encourage growth. We must do this for ourselves.

We prove each and every time there's a tragedy that we are a family because we stand in front of all to fight for our beliefs. Let us take the same will to stand up for all honorable talents that we have that makes up The Bronx. Join together within communities and share what we have to offer. Change begins with you. The impact you have on your family, friends, community and borough can go further than what you think. Spread the love, because that's what we truly need in our streets.

The Bronx is home to many--we are a community who will always be united despite anything that comes our way! There's no doubt in my mind that we can change what is happening. The love must be spread. The peace must be showcased. Safe zones must be created! The platform is there, it's up to us to stand tall, uplift, and inspire our youth. Be proud to say you're from The Boogie Down: the borough that will overcome all evil.

With love,

Justina Rosa
