St. Vincent Covers National Anthem for the NFL's "Football is Family" Campaign
You’re preparing for your Fantasy draft. Your favorite team’s memorabilia is starting to see the light of day again. You’re engrossed in dozens of messages between yourself and your friends over whose residence you’ll all spend a Sunday afternoon in. Football season is nigh.
The National Football League has been airing a particular commercial in preparation. You may have noticed the ad run throughout the Olympics, as the NFL pushes its “Football is Family” campaign. You also may have noticed on the bottom left corner of the commercial that that rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner is played by none other than Grammy Award winning musician, Annie Clark, known by her stage name: St. Vincent.
Known for her melodically sharp voice and visceral shredding, Annie Clark has been making heads turn since her marvelous 2007 debut Marry Me. Three more solo albums, a joint album with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album, St. Vincent’s cover of the U.S. National Anthem comes into your television screens with a proud, slightly off-kilter, sound that's mired in strangely middling optimism. Annie does reside in New York, but is originally from Dallas. You can watch her discuss her version of the National Anthem and her amusing memories of Dallas Cowboys fandom below.
